Bora Bora – A Day at the Beach

Motu Picnic

Takitumu Conservation Tour

Nature and bird lovers especially will relish this unique opportunity to explore Rarotonga’s exotic bird and plant species during a memorable island conservation tour.
Depart the pier for the transfer to the Conservation Center. Upon arrival, you will begin your guided walking tour. Along the way, you will learn about conservation efforts involving the flycatcher, or kakerori, an indigenous bird found only on Rarotonga. Over the years, the bird’s numbers have dwindled as a result of an increase in natural predators. Your visit, along with the visits of many hundreds of others, will provide the landowners with the funds needed to conduct research into various means of preserving and promoting this rare species of bird.
The conservation area is also a tropical rain forest featuring many types of medicinal plants, and you will hear about the many local uses for such herbal remedies.
Following your walking tour, you will be returned to the ship.

Taha’a Cultural Tour

After a brief tender boat ride to the pier, you will bemet by your local guide and “Le Truck”. You will start exploring this scenic island, known as the Vanilla Island, by first visiting a Vanilla Plantation. You will have a brief tour of the grounds of the plantation and a presentation into farming and cultivation of this precious spice. Afterwards you will continue your guided tour and you will learn about the history, the legends and present-day life of Taha’a. There will be a number of photo stops along the route. Your final stop will be at the ‘Motu Pearl Village’ where you will find out all about the creation of the Tahitian Black Pearl and enjoy refreshments and local fruits in season. After the visit you will be transferred by boat directly to Motu Mahana.

Sacred Sites & Legendary Places

Your spectacular excursion starts with a friendly introduction from your expert anthropologist/archaeologist guide, who has first hand experience working on the sites you will visit. Boarding “Le Truck”, French Polynesia’s famous local style bus, you will depart from Maroe Village on the small island of Huahine Iti, crossing the bridge to Huahine Nui, or ‘big island’. Here you will drive past lush green valleys and turquoise lagoon through the capital town of Fare, where Captain James Cook sojourned on his visits to the island.
Your first stop is Maeva village, considered to be one of French Polynesia’s most important archaeological areas and home to the largest pre-historic habitation site in Polynesia. During your walk through the village, you will explore the archaeological sites along the lake shore and the Fare Pote’e Museum. You will learn about Polynesian origins and migrations, traditional society, religion, botany, European explorers and get a first hand look at various traditional tools, handicrafts and artifacts.
You will continue on to Mata’ire’a hill, just above the Village of Maeva and home to more than 200 stone structures, including marae, agricultural terraces, house foundations, fortification walls and burial platforms.
Your next stop, via “Le Truck”, is a local family run vanilla plantation where you will have the opportunity to purchase various vanilla products. Continuing on, you will stop to see and learn about the 500 year old fish traps that thanks to restoration work are used again today by the people of Maeva Village.
Your return journey to port, will take you through the village of Faie where your guide will feed the island’s giant blue-eyed eels that swim in the stream, before enjoying a photo-stop at the Belvedere Lookout, for panoramic views of Huahine Iti and beautiful Maroe Bay.

Polynesian Cultural Tour

Board an island bus at Halaevalu Wharf and proceed to Eneio Botanical Garden. This tour offers a truly interactive experience which allows you to relive Polynesian yesterday and experience native lifestyles through guided, on-site, live demonstration and gentle strolling tours amongst the lush tropical paradise of the stunning and only Botanical Garden in Tonga. You will be fascinated with the various demonstrations which includes the making of clothing from bark, along with the creation of jewelry and mats from pandanus leaves, the making of milk and products from coconuts, the making of beverages from plant roots, the production of essence from vanilla beans, and juice from nonu fruits. Pa “Son of Rarotonga”

Discover the wisdom of Pa, one of the Cook Islands best known traditional healers, during this informative guided nature trek.
Depart the pier for the drive to the interior of the island. Upon arrival, you will join your guide on a trek along an ancient pathway used by Pa’s ancestors before the missionaries arrived. Along the way, your guide will share Pa’s in-depth knowledge of medicinal plants and of the culture and history of these islands. He will also provide demonstrations of the preparation of various traditional medicines and their applications. Bottled water and seasonal fruit will be served at Pa’s residence.

Fiji’s Culture & Heritage Tour

Visit Fiji’s capital city, Suva – center of commerce and the seat of government. This guided drive tour will take you to see various iconic sites such as the President’s Residence and nearby Albert Park (where Kingsford Smith landed his small aircraft on his epic flight from the United States to Australia in 1928) as well as Thurston Botanical Gardens. During the tour you will also see The Borron House (home of Fiji’s greatest statesman Ratu Sukuna and for use only by foreign dignitaries). You will also have the opportunity to visit the Fiji Museum. Bilo Battery Historical Site and World War II Heritage Site is also included in the tour on the 19 September only. During World War II, the guns at Bilopeninsula lent a degree of comfort to the people in a time of uncertainty and fears of news of the Japanese invasion flashed across the Pacific. The guns once pointed out from the side of Bilopeninsula like twin fingers of death, down to the Bay of islands in Lamiand across Suva harbour to the capital. They were placed there to guard the passage in the reef leading to Suva harbor.

Cultural Visit and Firewalking Show
Port: Beqa Island, Fiji

Legend has it that over 500 years ago the men of Beqa Island were given the gift of being able to walk on fire by an eel in exchange for its life. Today, the descendants of these warriors carry on the tradition, observing the same strict rules of tabu as the ancestors. Men are chosen as representatives from different villages. Ten days prior to the ceremony, they segregate themselves from females and are not allowed to eat coconut. The fire pit is dug out 12 to 15 feet in diameter and 3 to 4 feet deep. Large river stones are then collected and placed in the pit, filling it up. Six to eight hours before the ceremony a log fire is built over the top of the stones, heating them up. The Firewalkers are led to the arena accompanied by dances and chants. Leaves and vines are grazed across the stones to prepare the pit. The men then proceed to walk across the stones in a few different phases. Finally, a bundle of grass is thrown onto the pit and the group huddles in the center while chanting a song. Bands around the ankle of each participant, which are made of tree ferns that do not burn, are thrown into the pit. The pit is finally covered with earth, and days later, the ankle bands are recovered and ground up, mixed with water, and eaten by the Firewalkers.
A tender boat will transfer you from the ship to the beach on Beqa Island. From the beach landing area, you will walk approximately 20-25 minutes to the village along an uneven, rough dirt path. Upon your arrival in the village, you will be greeted and welcomed by the fearsome Fijian warriors in traditional costumes. Villagers serenade and escort you to the village green where a traditional kava ceremony will take place. You will then be seated in a covered area to watch the ceremony and the Meke, a special dance performed by the dancers normally only for their Paramount Chief. The highlight of the village visit is the Firewalking! After all the excitement, you will walk back to the beach for your transfer back to the ship.
Please note: CULTURAL REQUIREMENT: It is mandatory for guests to wear long pants and long-sleeve shirts. No guest will be allowed on the tour without covered arms and legs. Not suitable for guests with mobility and walking difficulties.

Cultural Highlights of Huahine

Explore one of the most picturesque and geographically diverse of the Society Islands during this scenic tour of Huahine.
Depart the pier for a ride by coach to Fare, Huahine’s main village. Enjoy a leisurely guided stroll around the village, then visit a vanilla plantation, where you will observe the process of drying vanilla and learn different ways to cook with this ubiquitous spice.
Then, proceed to Maeva, one of Polynesia’s most important archaeological sites. Upon arrival, you will discover some well-preserved marae, or ancient Polynesian temples. You will also see fish traps that were built centuries ago and are still in use today. Your next visit will beto Faie, home of the famous blue-eyed eels that populate a stream running through the village. You will even watch as your guide feeds these enormous eels.
Your tour concludes with a stop at Huahine’s Belvedere Point for spectacular views and photo opportunities. Then, reboard your coach for the return ride to the pier.

Atuona to Taaoa
Port: Atuona, Hiva Oa, Marquesas Islands

Discover the ancient tribes of the Taaoa Valley during this memorable journey to their archaeological ruins.
Depart the pier for the ride to Taaoa, located approximately 7 miles southwest of Atuona on the coastal road. The Tiu, ancestors of most of the Hivaoan tribes, and several other tribes once lived in the Taaoa Valley. Their archaeological ruins can be reached by off-road vehicle or on foot. During your ride, you will visit the Upeke Ceremonial Center, which comprises house platforms, a tohua (tribal ceremonial center), public and sacred meae (archaeological ruins), and storage pits of breadfruit paste for feasts. The tohua was restored for the Third Festival of the Marquesas in 1991.
The remaining area is in the same state in which archaeologist Ralph Linton found it in 1920. Among the objects you might see is a tiki measuring 4 feet by 5 feet, with the eyes, part of the right arm, and the right ear carved in bas relief. According to Linton, this stone was an altar stone on which sacrificed victims were placed after being killed at the tohua and carried up to the meae. Directly below the platform is an irregular round head carved from a porous black volcanic stone (which may have been moved from its original position). On another platform in the tohua section, you can see a row of worked ke’etu stone slabs. One of them has some carved lines; the design is very difficult to see in sunlight. Locals say it is a whale or canoe, but it is actually a tiki face carved in bas relief.
Following your visit, you will reboard your off-road vehicle for the return ride to the pier.
Please note: This tour involves driving over rough roads. Access to the site involves a path over slippery stones and negotiation of high stone steps up to the tiki. This tour is not recommended for guests with back or neck problems. Each vehicle will accommodate four guests. Families and friends are advised to contact the Travel Concierge desk aboard ship in order to be assigned to the same vehicle. Although the drivers used are the best available, they are not guides, and their command of English is poor. Your patience and understanding are greatly appreciated.

The guides help you use special equipment and techniques to experience this amazing wilderness from a unique perspective. Please note: Wear comfortable clothing you don’t mind getting a little dirty or wet and that will not interfere with the adjustment of the harness or helmet. Closed-toe sport shoes provide the best protection for your feet, however strap-on sandals are acceptable. Bring your camera, bottled water and insect repellent with you to the tour site. As it rains periodically throughout the day, you may want to bring a lightweight poncho or jacket or a change of clothing. Please bring a hair tie if you have long hair. Participants must be reasonably fit, weigh less than 135 kg (300 pounds), be at least 5 years of age and have a torso length of at least 45cm (18 inches). Children under legal age (18) must be accompanied by an adult. The tour is not recommended for persons with asthma, balance problems, epilepsy, heart problems, some disabilities, back, neck or shoulder problems or those who are pregnant.

Trails of the Ancients Trek

Don’t miss this fun, informative, and interactive visit to a relatively little visited side of Tahiti, as onboard lecturer archaeologist Mark Eddowes leads a unique cultural tour of the upland rain forest of Opunohu valley.
Mark Eddowes has worked clearing, mapping, excavating and restoring archaeological sites in the Opunohu valley since the 1980s. He works particularly on the life of the ancient Tahitians in this natural environment, studying their ancient habitation sites, agricultural terrace complexes, stone tool workshops, and ancient temples or marae. The recognized expert on the marae of the Society Islands, Mark will share with you his research results into the history of the temples, the rituals practiced there, and the warrior chiefs associated with them.
You will also learn about the uses in ancient times of the flora and tree species of the island for canoe manufacture, medicinal uses, and the sculpture of ti’i (tiki figures) and traditional house manufacture. Also on the itinerary of this tour are the landing site of Captain James Cook in 1777, the Opunohu agricultural school, and Belvedere lookout point.
Then, follow shady trails within the forest, between the ancient archaeological sites. Your transport will be on the traditional Le Truck, providing vista views and spectacular scenery along the way.
Please note: The forest trails are all downhill but can be slick after rain, and tree roots sometimes cross the trails. Insect repellent is not provided, so please bring your own. Bamboo staffs are provided to give stability if needed. Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended. A second Tahitian guide is always at the back of the line for any additional aid during the trek. Bring some money, as purchases (organic vanilla, native jam preserves, and real vanilla ice cream!) can be bought at the agricultural school. A small bottle of water is also recommended for the trek. Not recommended for people with heart disease, lung disease, or muscle, joint, or balance problems. Total length of the tour is 4 hours, 2 of which are spent walking the miles through the forest. On Sundays, the Agricultural School is closed.

The Three Coconut Trails of Moorea – Hiking Tour – 8:30 am

Take in a brisk workout and splendid views of Moorea at the same time during this invigorating hike along the Sister Island’s three coconut trails.
Depart the pier for the brief transfer to the starting point of your hiking tour. Upon arrival, you will proceed through the trails of the Sister Island. Along the way, a stop will be made at the famous Belvedere lookout for panoramic views and photo opportunities over Cook’s and Opunohu Bays.
Next, continue on to the ridge separating the 2,887-foot-tall Mouaroa from the 3,960-foot-tall Tohivea. This brisk mountain walk will provide you with an intimate look at Tahiti’s natural beauty, as well as offering beautiful views over Vaianae-Haapiti and Mt. Rotui. During your hike, you will learn about the island’s flora and fauna and be served some freshly picked fruit. At the conclusion of your hiking tour, you will be transferred back to the pier.
Please note: This tour involves a very strenuous and lengthy 3-½ mile hike over partly-shaded and uneven terrain, uphill and downhill trail walking/hiking with an elevation gain of 1,171 feet. This tour is recommended for guests in very good physical condition. Operation of this tour is dependent upon favorable weather. Slow Paced Belvedere and Pineapple Valley by E-Bike

Enjoy a slow paced bicycle guided tour to Belvedere and the Pineapple Valley. Your guide will commence the tour by giving you an introductory course on how to use the simple E-bike settings. Choose the setting that fit your fitness level, from no assistance to Turbo and off you go visiting the beautiful Pineapple Island. At every stop the guide will provide you with a multitude of details about the sites and their history. Visit Cooks and Opunohu bays, stop at the Marae (archaeological sites) and Belvedere Lookout point. Pedal through the pineapple plantations and stop for a jam tasting at the Agricultural High school. Your e-motor assisted mountain bike will make it really easy to complete the tour and even the less active guests will feel like Le Tour de France winner.

Omoa Petroglyphs Walk
Port: Omoa, Fatu Hiva, Marquesas Islands

Set in a luscious native forest within a picturesque valley is an ancient ceremonial site where Marquesans prayed to their gods to provide abundant water for their crops. Trekking up to the site you will pass an old chief’s paepae upon which is a small tiki carved in the famous ke’etu stone of the islands. Ascending inland you will see a number of sites whose functions will be explained to you by your on-board lecturer in anthropology and archaeology, Mark Eddowes. Finally you will arrive on the crest of a ridge featuring important petroglyphs, or rock art. The images depict anthropomorphic images of men, concentric circle eyes of magical tikis and even an ancient sailing canoe. However, the most impressive petroglyph and one of the largest in the Marquesas is that of the famous paoa, which looks like a huge tuna fish, carved into the rock. See also the grinding, polishing and sharpening stones used in ancestral working of adzes and other tools. Enjoy the magnificent scenery surrounding the site as sharp mountain peaks pierce the sky. This excursion provides a wonderful chance to visit the interior of Fatu Hiva’s beautiful Omoa Valley.
Please note: The hike is medium to difficult and involves uphill walking in hot and humid conditions. Participants should be physically fit, carry a bottle of water and wear a hat. Sturdy footwear appropriate to trekking is recommended.

Huahine Safari Expedition

Discover the beauty of Huahine on this 4×4 tour of the island. Depart the pier by off-road vehicle for the drive to Huahine Nui. Stop at the “Bellevue” View Point and capture beautiful photos of Maroe Bay and the m/s Paul Gauguin. Visit the village of Faie, and the sacred blue-eyed eels who reside there.
Next, take a short Polynesian outrigger canoe trip to visit, “Huahine Pearl Farm and Pottery” where you will learn the secrets of the black pearl and see Polynesian pottery made with a glaze found at the bottom of the lagoon while pearl farming. The pottery is available for purchase and refreshments will be served during the visit.
Continue on to Maeva, the island’s most important marae (archaeological site). Drive along Lake Fauna Nui and see the ancient fish traps, restored by the local archaeologists and still in use today before returning via scenic road to the pier. On the way back, you will pass through the village of Fare, the main village of Huahine.
Please note: Although the off-road vehicle will remain on the main road for most of the drive, this tour also involves travel over non-paved roads with steep ascents and descents. This tour is not recommended for guests with back and/or neck problems, guests who suffer from vertigo or motion sickness, or guests with limited mobility. Huahine Iti by Ebike

Departing from Maroe pier after your brief refresh course on how to handle an ebike, you will head toward the eastern part of Huahine Iti with the goal of completing the 27km around the smaller Huahine Island with your guide providing you explanations. During your tour, several stops will be proposed with different viewpoints. You will discover the archaeological site (marae) Anini as well as a visit to a traditional pareo painting workshop. You will then head to Avea bay and the Mahana hotel for a moment of relaxation, snorkeling, swimming on its magnificent white sand beach. Aitutaki Discovery Safari

Visit ancient sacred grounds, or marae, such as Are Mango, where ancient rituals and sacrifices were performed, and learn how ancient Polynesian warriors defended their island with the help of supernatural beings.
Depart from the pier and head toward the coastal village of Nikaupara. Stop briefly at Vainamu, a freshwater pond once used as a gathering place by the young people of the island. Continue along to the inland village of Tautu, stopping at the ancient temple grounds of Are Mango and the Poatu o Rae – the ancient throne of Rae, reputed to have been the strongest man on Aitutaki. Your guide will tell of his legends, such as tales of how how warriors of old voyaged long distances to experience the music and drums of the Are Karioi – the House of Entertainment where the “Yuppies” of Polynesia gathered for what was reported a marathon of dancing and courtship.
After a short ride through plantations, your tour will head toward the top of Mount Piraki where you will see some of the best views of the coastal village of Amuri and Arutanga. There, you will also view the remains of a World War II bunker built by the Americans during their time on the island.
From Piraki, you will head to the highest peak on the island, Maunga Pu. The ride to the very top is exhilarating, and the view that awaits you there is breathtaking: a panoramic view of the island and its magnificent lagoon.
This tour is more than just a means of reaching the top of Aitutaki’s highest mountain without hard work, however. It is an opportunity to get to some of Aitutaki’s best kept secret spots. Even for locals living on Aitutaki, places like the Poatu o Rae (the rock of Rae) and the Marae Are Mango (the house of Sharks) are places they hear about but never actually visit. Depart the pier in an off-road vehicle for a journey inside the volcanic crater from which Moorea was created. En route, you will discover the heart of a huge pineapple plantation inside the island’s deepest valley. Moorea, Polynesia’s Green Garden, is renowned for its Agricultural School, which receives students from all the outer islands. A stop will be made here to sample some homemade jam. Ice cream and local fruit juices will also be available for purchase. Your guide will then drive you across a large plantation filled with vanilla, bananas, grapefruit, and oranges, and will acquaint you with the island’s diverse flora and fauna.
Next, you will continue to an open-air temple, or marae. After a stop to learn about the Polynesian culture, you will ascend to the top of Belvedere lookout for spectacular vistas over Cook’s and Opunohu Bays. Snorkeling Tour – Savusavu

At the edge of the reef which runs out from Savusavu Bay is a Lighthouse, which gives its name to the famed snorkeling site. Board either the “Island Fever” or the “Island Paradise” and take an enjoyable fast and scenic ride along the inside of the Bay to snorkel amongst beautiful coral and tropical fish in crystal-clear turquoise waters. Savusavu is home to some of the most vibrant and colorful coral in Fiji. There are numerous plate corals, soft spaghetti corals and fish, fish, fish….myriads of black and white sergeant fish as well as clownfish, orange and purple anthias, trumpet fish, pale green damsel fish, humpbacked wrasse and Maori wrasse. The scene takes on the appearance of a tropical aquarium as abundant small fish dart in and out of the striking coral. Giant clams, grouper and parrotfish are also commonly seen in and around the coral formations. Sea turtles frequent the Lighthouse so it is always a treat to see one or two. Occasionally a friendly white-tip reef shark will be seen.

This informative stop will help you understand the value of these lustrous jewels in these islands – and around the world.
Continue on to a small motu for an opportunity to snorkel in its crystal-clear water. This motu is located close to a pass where experienced snorkelers can observe the drop-off of the reef. Don your snorkeling gear and enter the water, where you will see wonderful underwater fauna and a myriad of tropical fish swimming around you.
Following your snorkeling session, you will embark the canoe for the return ride to the Motu Mahana for Paul Gauguin’s Beach BBQ.

Depart the pier aboard the snorkeling boat for a cruise by the ancient crater rim of Motu Toopua, then past Motu Tapu. You will then drop anchor on a shallow sandbank to discover the elegant, yet harmless stingrays. Watch in amazement as your guide hand-feeds the stingrays as they glide effortlessly around you. If you are willing, your guide will even help you get close enough to touch them.
Next, you will continue on for a visit to a pristine coral garden. Upon arrival, you will receive your safety and diving instructions, then have an opportunity to snorkel in depths ranging from 4 to 5 feet. Shark & Ray Watching by Glass Bottom Boat

Get acquainted with sharks and rays in a unique new way during a glass-bottom boat ride in Bora Bora and a swim with stingrays.
After embarking your glass-bottom boat at the pier, you will depart for a brief cruise. Your guide will then tie the boat to a mooring in about 25 feet of water and try to attract black-tipped sharks. You will observe the dance of these ocean denizens and, if you are lucky, spot some lemon sharks known to frequent the area. Next, you will proceed to a shallower, clear lagoon for a rare opportunity to view graceful stingrays and even swim alongside them.

Please note: Underwater viewing takes place through large glass windows. The roof provides protection from the sun and eliminates glare, enhancing photo and video quality. Ocean Addict Whale Expedition

Observe humpback whales in their natural environment, the ocean. If conditions are favorable (a calm sea; calm whale behavior) and participants who are strong snorkelers, then you may also snorkel in the water to observe the whales.
From July through October humpback whales come to Moorea’s waters to rest, mate, give birth, and nurse their calves. Whales are found during 95% of these tours, and you may also see schools of dolphins. The primary objective will be to find and observe humpback whales, and if possible, to slip into the water to observe them underwater. Getting into the water is not mandatory or always possible, so people who simply want to observe whales from the boat are also welcome.
Guarantee cannot be given that whales will be found nor that it will be possible to get into the water, but the team will do their best. Participation is limited to6 people maximum.

Nausori Highland Tour

Get to see Vava’u with its natural and beautiful adornments in the west side of the island.
You will travel through township to Tailulu College which is a scenic spot to view Mount Talau, some of the scattered islands, Port of Refuge. The Island Feast with Cultural Floorshow consists of avariety of local foods, international cuisines, local desserts and seasonal fruits highlighted by a group of locals performing traditional songs and dances. The lunch menu offers simple island foods, such as roast suckling pig, chicken, fish, lu pulu (corned beef cooked with young taro leaves and coconut cream), taro, kumara (Tongan sweet potatoes), and seasonal tropical fruits: papaya, watermelon, pineapple, and bananas. Transportation is by non-air-conditioned island bus and minivan which are not equipped with PA systems. Some roads are unpaved and rutted; the ride may be bumpy.

Huahine Exploration by Jeep & Boat

Visit archaeological sites, sacred blue-eyed eels, a black pearl farm, and an easy 40-minute snorkel on this land and sea tour of Huahine.
Your tour will depart the pier by off road vehicle and cross the bridge to Huahine Nui (big Huahine). Head around the majestic bay where the m/s Paul Gauguin is anchored, then ascend the island’s steepest road for a spectacular panoramic view over Maroe Bay and take a photo with the ship in the background. After, a stop will be made to feed the sacred giant blue-eyed eels that live in the stream running through the village of Faie.
Continue your adventure along the lake Fauna Nui to Maeva, the most extensive archaeological site in the Pacific. Here, you will see stone temples and ancient fish traps still in use today restored by archaeologists. Afterwards, take a short Polynesian outrigger canoe trip to visit “Huahine Pearl Farm and Pottery”, where you will learn the secrets of the black pearl and see their unique blue pottery made with a glaze found at the bottom of the lagoon while pearl farming. The pottery is available for purchase, and refreshments will be served at the pearl farm. Cruise the lagoon for a short trip on a regular boat and a snorkel stop to Motu Te Tiare. Coral Garden Drift Snorkeling

Depart the ship by covered motorized boat for a 15-minute ride along the west coast of Taha’a. Upon arrival, you will disembark the boat for a guided walk across an uninhabited islet, or motu, located just off the coast. After reaching the other side of the motu, you will commence your snorkeling session. Your guide will lead you as the current carries you through the shallow lagoon on the way back to the boat. The drift can be moderate to strenuous depending on the strength of the current. The drift is done in a single line with one snorkeling guide leading the 12 snorkelers spaced 10 feet apart and one snorkeling guide closing up on the group This area abounds with a spectacular variety of tropical fish and amazing coral. Upon returning to the boat, refreshments and additional snorkeling time will be made available before you are transferred back to Motu Mahana.

Depart the pier for the brief transfer via Le Truck to the waverunner launching point. Depart the marina platform aboard a Zodiac® boat for the ride to the ledges of a coral reef. Resembling fingers on a hand, these narrow points of coral were formed by thousands of years of surging water and extend from the reef for more than 200 feet. The fingers start at a depth of 30 feet and extend to 120 feet or more. The sides and top of each extension are rich in hard coral of various species. Sharks, Javanese moray eels, Sea turtles and multicolored tropical fish abound inside this reef and are constantly moving about in search of food. Meet your dive instructors at the marina platform where you will receive your safety and diving instructions then you will board into Zodiac® for the ride to the dive site at Rangiroa’s outer reef. The whole group will gear up and roll in the water together. As the current exits the pass, it brings a lot of the nutrients for which fish and coral hungrily compete. You will view the hard coral that covers the ocean bottom and swim among large Napoleon wrasse, barracudas, and tropical fish. Eagle and manta rays, sharks of various types, and an occasional dolphin are often seen here, too. You will finish the dive with a deep-blue water ascent.

SCUBA Rangiroa 2 Tank – Active Advanced Certified Divers with Outside Operator

Experienced certified divers only. This program is offered through an outside operator and requires a minimum of 50 logged dives and 10 dives within the last 12 months.
Rangiroa offers some of the best dives in the world in and around the Tiputa Pass. Experienced divers won’t want to miss this opportunity to explore this prime diving site.
During austral summer (December-March), great hammerhead sharks and manta rays populate this area, and sedentary common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) regularly play in group in the pass or on the outer reef. Because of its large size and the existence of only two passes, each high tide creates a strong incoming current, while each low tide creates a strong outgoing current in those two passes. When the current is flowing inward through Tiputa Pass, about 100 shark specimens gather at its entrance, at 150 feet (50meters) deep. Led by the strong current, sharks can remain motionless, allowing divers to observe them without any difficulty. The dive sites will be decided depending of the tide. Maximum depth on some dives in Rangiroa can be 100 feet (30meters).

SCUBA Hapatoni – Active Advanced Certified Divers with Deep Diver Specialty

Diving in the Marquesas Island is like jumping in the middle of the underwater wilderness. This dive is a unique opportunity to dive along rocky point where a massive concentration and variety of marine species gather to grab the nutrient brought along by the currents. You may have the chance to see eagle rays, manta, impressive schools of fish dancing in rhythm to avoid being caught by predators such as different kind of sharks and big jack fishes swimming like rockets. You will embark into the dive boat from the gangway and receive your safety briefing on the way to the dive site. The boat ride is about 15 minutes. SCUBA Hammerhead Sentry Point – Active Advanced Certified Divers

This dive has the unique opportunity to dive with scalloped hammerhead sharks – they usually gather around a big rock at the entrance of the bay among jack fish, tunas, manta rays and more. SCUBA Arutanga Passage – Certified Divers – with Outside Operator

You will meet at the ship`s marina to pick-up your fins and wetsuits before taking the tender to shore. Once there, you will suit up and gear check before boarding the local dive boat and get ready to head to the dive site that is only five minutes away from the pier. There, you will be helped with the equipment and do a back roll entry before heading down towards the canyons where you can observe huge green sea turtle resting on the bottom, occasional passage of spotted eagle rays, napoleon wrasse, and emperor angel fish. At about 90 feet a small family of resident white tips are hiding under an outcropping rock. This site only features hard corals.

SCUBA 2 Tanks Hiva-Oa w/outside operator – Active Advanced Certified Divers w/ Deep Diver Specialty

This dive is operated by an outside operator. Please meet at the lobby with one of the marina staff that will escort you on the tender to shore where you will meet the local dive staff. After a very short walk to the pier, you will board the dive boat (a large aluminum covered diving boat) and will be asked to check your SCUBA gear.
After a brief welcoming ceremony, you will proceed to the first dive located along the Hanake Rock just behind The Gauguin`s anchoring position. On this first drift dive, the maximum depth will be around 100 feet and you will follow the drop off. The water is very rich in plankton can affect the visibility. You will most likely have the chance to see manta rays, endemic stingrays, octopus and big pelagic fishes.
During the surface interval, you will move to the second dive site. Fruits, biscuits, tea and lemonade will be available between dives. The second location will take you all the way down to 80 feet. Follow the shoreline to reach a pinnacle where you can spot schools of little fish, endemic dragon moray eel, pelagic fishes and rays. After the second dive, you will be sailing back to the pier and take the tender back to the ship.

SCUBA 2 Tanks dives with outside operator

Depart the marina platform aboard a local dive boat where you will receive your safety briefing during the 30 minutes ride to the pass of Tiva between Tahaa and Raiatea.
Once on the site you will be helped to gear up and when the whole group will be ready you will entry in the water and dive along the side of the pass where you will be looking into the blue for pelagic fish, rays and possibly sharks. The maximum depth of this dive will be around 70 feet (20 meters).
Between the two dives you will stay on the boat for approximately one hour surface interval while moving to the second dive site called Miri-Miri. The second dive will take place on the outer reef of the lagoon of Raiatea. During this dive you will glide along the reef surrounded by friendly black-tip reef sharks and may have the chance to spot a big Napoleon wrasse among the reef fish. The maximum depth of this second dive will be maximum 70 feet (20 meters).
After the second dive you will be transferred back to Motu Mahana where you will enjoy the complimentary barbecue served to all Paul Gauguin Cruises’ guests. Please note that dives sites may change depending on the weather condition.

Enjoy these giant rays gliding slowly around coral heads while receiving the delicate treatment of the cleaner wrasses.The depth for this dive is around 60 feet (18 meters). Whale Watching Expedition (Seasonal)

Dr. Michael Poole’s team will take you on this exciting and educational boat-based eco-tour where you can observe humpback whales in their natural environment, the ocean. If conditions are favorable (a calm sea; calm whale behavior) and participants who are strong snorkelers, then you may also snorkel in the water to observe the whales. You can also bask in the dramatic beauty of Moorea and learn about its geology.
From July through October humpback whales come to Moorea’s waters to rest, mate, give birth, and nurse their calves. Whales are found during 95% of these tours, and you may also see schools of dolphins. The primary objective will be to find and observe humpback whales, and if possible, to slip into the water to observe them underwater. Getting into the water is not obligatory or always possible, so people who simply want to observe whales from the boat are also welcome
In February 2019 Dr. Poole and his research and conservation efforts on humpback whales were featured on Animal Planet and ABC TV. His team operates with the utmost respect in the presence of these incredible giants. A guarantee cannot be given that whales will be found nor that it will be possible to get into the water, but the team will do their best. Participation is limited to 12 people maximum.

Waisali Rain Forest & Reserve

The Waisali Reserve is one of the few remaining unexploited forests in Fiji and is the natural habitat for the native Fijian hardwood – some of the trees being over 100 years old. On the two hour forest trail engulfed by majestic trees you may be fortunate to see or hear the red breasted musk parrot or the beautiful orange dove -both endemic and rare bird species. The quiet serene is disturbed only by the occasional sound of the barking pigeon and moving stream water. Take time to rest in the bure beside the rock pool which is home to finfish species, eel, prawn and freshwater snails. The reserve freshwater fauna are unique so the pool is kept undisturbed and is not suitable for swimming. This tour involves uphill walking so good walking shoes are recommended.

Nuku Hiva’s spectacular beauty is yours to discover during this off-road adventure in the Taipivai Valley.
Depart the pier for the ride to the Taipivai Valley, one of the richest archaeological sites in the Marquesas Islands.The Taipivai Valley is a location made famous by the American writer and former sailor, Herman Melville (1819-1891), who deserted his ship and hid in this valley. Captured by indigenous natives, he lived in the Taipivai Valley for three weeks, a period during which he observed their way of life. This experience was the inspiration for his first novel, Typee.
En route to the Taipivai Valley, you will ride through the island’s interior along a steep trail lined with lush flora and vegetation, then traverse exquisite mountain terrain. Along the way, you’ll enjoy many opportunities to take magnificent photographs, as you stop several times to take in spectacular vistas of the coastline, bays, and valleys. At one particular stop, you will see your ship anchored in the Bay of Taihoae. Next, you will drive through Taipivai’s small agricultural villages, then proceed to a long stretch of beach at the end of the village. Here, you will stop again to admire splendid vistas of the valley and surrounding mountains.
Following your visit, you will reboard your off-road vehicle for the return ride to the pier.
Please note: As this tour involves travel over rough, uneven terrain, it is not recommended for guests with back and/or neck problems. The tour involves very little walking. Guests are encouraged to wear insect repellant or coconut oil for the skin (monoi) to ward off small beach mosquitoes (nonos). Pricing listed is per person. Urata Waterfall Tour

Enjoy a 30 minute scenic drive along the edge of Savusavu Bay passing the industrial area and Balaga Bay, (proposed site for the new wharf), to Urata Village (pronounced ‘oo rartar’) where you will be met by warriors who will escort you to the village meeting house to first meet the chief who will welcome you and grant permission to go to the waterfall.
Join the village guides who will take you on an easy 30 minute trek through the village plantations and rainforest to the waterfall and swimming holes. Scenic Drive to Hanavave

Fatu Hiva, the most remote island of the inhabited Marquesan islands offers green and lush vegetation with sheer, rocky landscapes. There are only two villages on the island connected by one road (17 km). The scenic 4×4 ride from Omoa to Hanavave offers numerous photo opportunities over dramatic landscapes, coastline and deep gorges and valleys. On arrival in Hanavave you will have some free time to stretch your legs and explore the village and take more photos of one of the most picturesque locations in the Marquesas, the iconic Bay of Virgins. The bay was named by Catholic missionaries, who said that the phallic shaped stone outcrops were formed as veiled virgins.

Your first stop on this tour will be just outside of town at the factory of Copra Millers of Fiji – the leading manufacturer of coconut oil in Fiji. Your day begins with a 40 to 50 minute drive along the cross island road to Nakawaqa Rainforest located on the northeastern part of Savusavu town. Guests are welcomed on arrival by the villagers and escorted to the waterfall following trails in the rainforest.
Please note the weather condition can change the activity level of the tour. Normally 30 minutes trek in the forest from and to the waterfall. If affected by rain, the trail may become slippery and the tour is recommended for guests with good physical condition.

Molituva Village Tour

Molituva is an old village fort that was the dwelling place of one of Fiji’s most fiercest and feared warriors. Touring the ruins of this great fort one could envisage the lives of these greater fighters. The dug out moats still visible and to walk the maze of tracks build by the warriors is indeed an experience that is not easily forgotten.
The Molituva tour takes you back in time and you can feel the eerie feeling as if you were there in those primitive days when witnessing the strewn old pottery, stone axes and traded steel axes dated back to the 13th Century. On arrival, you will be met and greeted with a serenade, then you will be informed on the village protocol that needs to be observed. Fully dressed warriors and traditionally dressed women escort you to the Village hall, where you can observe the different activities performed such as husking and scraping coconuts, weaving baskets and mats…Observe a traditional sevusevu ceremony as well as the traditional meke and re-enactment of tribal wars by warriors as they invade the village arena. Farewell songs will escort you back to your coaches.

Depart the pier aboard a glass-bottom boat, then slowly float over the huge coral heads that cluster in shallow areas inside the Tiputa Channel. Along the way, you will see a colorful world full of parrot fish, butterfly fish, and surgeon fish through the large windows. You may also encounter black-tipped sharks, and catch a glimpse of the majestic Napoleon fish.

Bora Bora Island Tour by “Le Truck”

Explore the island paradise of Bora Bora during this scenic orientation tour via Le Truck. Depart the pier aboard a Le Truck. First, you will drive through the district of Fa’anui. Along the way, you will pass by small villages and fields that offer a glimpse into the everyday life of the people of Bora Bora. A brief stop will be made at Fa’anui Bay for photographs of Mounts Otemanu and Pahia. Your drive will continue on to the ancient ceremonial site of Fa’anui Marae, followed by a look at the bunkers constructed by American GIs during WWII. Next, a stop will be made at Mama Edna’s to sample such local delicacies as breadfruit, poe mixed with coconut milk (not marinated), taro and tropical fruit. You will also have an opportunity to buy some local, hand-painted pareus. From a lookout point, you will see Mount Otemanu, Bora Bora’s highest peak, which stands as a silent sentinel over the Pearl of the Pacific. You will then pass by Bora Bora’s Club Med Village before reaching sandy Matira Beach. A stop will be made here to take in splendid vistas and photo opportunities before driving back to Vaitape. On occasion, an air-conditioned bus may replace Le Truck.
Please note: Le Truck is an open-air vehicle resembling a windowless bus. Be prepared for a bumpy ride during part of this island tour.

Black Pearl Farm
Port: Rangiroa, Tuamotus
Duration: 1.5 Hours
Explore Rangiroa’s black pearl industry and learn about pearl cultivation during this memorable visit to the Black Pearl Farm.
Depart the pier for a ride along Rangiroa’s main road, past the airport and on to the Black Pearl Farm. Most pearl farms are small-sized, and the number of workers at this farm is quite representative of the farms in this region.
Upon arrival at the farm, the staff will give you a brief lecture about the farming and production of black pearls. You will learn about the chronology and evolution of the industry, and how oysters are selected, grown, and then grafted for production. Following the lecture, you will proceed to the work sheds where oysters are sorted and cleaned, and watch a grafter at work as he skillfully plies his trade.
Following your visit, you will reboard your minivan for the return ride to the pier.
Please note: This tour is for guests who are interested in learning about pearl cultivation. The Tuamotus are very remote islands. Although the guides used are the best available, they are not certified, and their command of English may be very poor. Your patience and understanding are greatly appreciated.
